About the Guest

Marques G. King, AIA, NCARB, CNU
Architect, Urban Designer, Small Scale Developer
Managing Principal of Fabric[K] Design

“As a born & raised product of Detroit, Michigan, I was motivated to pursue a career in building things very early. The contradictions between ubiquitous stories of Detroit’s former glory contrasting with the harsh realities that I grew up in, inspired me to study the science of cities, and one day contribute to Detroit getting its ‘middle class swag’ back. For me as an architect, that means advocating for the more human-scaled, equitable and modernized versions of the building types, streets, neighborhoods, entrepreneurs, and businesses that built the middle class more than a century ago.”

Marques holds a B.A in Architecture and in Construction Management from Lawrence Tech., and a Masters of Architecture from the University of Maryland. Over the years, he has worked at every scale of the built environment, both domestically and internationally. As a trades-person Marques has held positions in a cabinet making shop, structural steel foundry, and as an electrician’s apprentice. As architect, he’s designed projects as small as residential roof repairs to multi-million-dollar-budget, 50+ unit, mixed-use apartment buildings. As an urban designer, the teams he has worked on have produced award-winning, published, and codified masterplans for cities like Atlanta, GA, Savannah, GA and Nanjing, China. Intimate understanding of the built-environment at every scale is present in every project-- It is critical to making sure that no building or urban component operates in isolation, but as an important piece to a much more elaborate neighborhood system.

Marques’s varied experience has allowed him to refine his architectural and development focus toward projects that directly affect the health and wealth of local and regional communities. This is the genesis of Fabric[K] Design. Fabric[K] works nationally, but its home base of Detroit, MI affords it the opportunity to make local change right here in Marques’s hometown.

About Fabric[K] Design

Fabric[K] Design strives to help people and organizations build better lifestyles through contextual, sustainable, & people-centric design.

At Fabric[K] Design, our focus is aimed toward designing, building, and nurturing the foundational elements of neighborhoods. Why? Because they have been forgotten. Yet, a healthy urban Fabric[K] is critical to sustaining equitable, financial and sentimental value in buildings, spaces and neighborhoods. It's the reason we have those fond memories of playing in the neighborhood, or walking to school, or walking to the corner store, or riding bikes in the street, or sitting on the stoop talking with friends. Fabric[K] is what holds all this together.

We design human-scaled architectural and urban solutions that are place-sensitive, finely-detailed, and cost-effective. But most importantly we design buildings and places for people first, creating value for both client and community.
