ABOUT: Brick + Beam Detroit will present a four-part, in-person educational series on Racism in Property Ownership in Detroit. Online blogs and videos on our website will supplement the in-person series with additional resources to call for awareness and change today. Join us on June 6th at 6:30pm for the third forum in the series.
Consequences of Systematic Discrimination on Property Ownership Today
How does Detroit continue to be impacted by this history today? Our speakers will showcase a variety of perspectives on how discrimination in property ownership remain today including examples of the racial wealth gap, differential homeownership, undervalued real estate, and the role of property taxes. While this series is based around the history that shapes Detroit, the series is also forward-focused. According to census data, in 2019 the U.S. homeownership rate for Black Americans has fallen to its lowest level since 1950. This forum will help us examine why that is and inform actions moving forward.
Speakers:
Monique Becker, Manager of Program Implementation at Building Community Value
Francis Grunow, Public Policy Consultant, Paris of the Midwest
Moderator: Dr. Alaina Jackson, Community Experience and Research Lead for Ford AV/Mobility's City:One Team and Principal at Cooperative Community Consultants, LLC
DATE: Monday, June 6th at 6:30pm
LOCATION: The Commons, 7900 Mack Avenue
All four events are free and open to the public, although a $10 suggested donation is appreciated. RSVP Encouraged!
