ABOUT: Brick + Beam Detroit will present a four-part, in-person educational series on Racism in Property Ownership in Detroit. Online blogs and videos on our website will supplement the in-person series with additional resources to call for awareness and change today. Join us on April 30th at 2pm for the first forum in the series.
Introduction to Property Ownership: Who Can Own What
From the initial colonization of Michigan, people were displaced and prevented from purchasing property in the area we know as Detroit. This multi-speaker introductory session and Q&A will cover a brief history of the original tribes of the area and the colonization of Detroit, and include an overview of displacement and systematic discrimination in property ownership -- specifically mortgages, deed covenants, and legislation -- that permitted discriminatory practices in real estate.
