After a long search we finally found a house that suit us--the lights turned on so it fooled us into thinking "it's not that bad!" We replaced the knob and tube, old pipes, did substantial plaster repair in every room, experimented with wall paper and pulled up all kinds of crazy floor coverings to reveal the floors below (ex. hard wood patterned carpet over hard wood, and then red carpet throughout).
