Tetris and Tetris DX Arrive on Nintendo Switch Online
On December 11, Nintendo added two classic Tetris games to the NES and Game Boy apps for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This release includes the 1989 NES version of Tetris and the 1998 Game Boy Color title Tetris DX, with a special video message from series creator Alexey Pajitnov thanking fans for their ongoing support of the Tetris franchise.
Tetris, originally developed by Alexey Pajitnov in 1985 for IBM computers in the Soviet Union, quickly became a global sensation after its international debut in 1988. Nintendo's 1989 release for the NES and Game Boy solidified Tetris as one of the most beloved puzzle games ever. The 1989 NES version, known for its fast-paced gameplay, remains a cult classic. In late 2023, Tetris history was made when 13-year-old player Blue Scuti reached level 157, triggering the game's "Kill screen."
Now, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can enjoy both the NES and Game Boy versions of Tetris. The 1989 NES version marks its first official re-release in 35 years, while Tetris DX is an upgraded version of the Game Boy classic, featuring a two-player versus mode. However, players will need separate NSO subscriptions to enjoy the multiplayer mode.
