Nintendo Fully Acquires Monolith Soft

Asked by terryaster at 6:35am on Dec 14 2024

Nintendo has completed its acquisition of Monolith Soft, securing full ownership of the Japanese studio best known for its Xenosaga and Xenoblade Chronicles series. This move solidifies the studio’s relationship with Nintendo, though little is expected to change, as Monolith Soft has operated as a Nintendo subsidiary for most of its history.

Monolith Soft, founded in 1999 by former SquareSoft designer Tetsuya Takahashi, originally operated under Namco and later Bandai Namco before Nintendo acquired a majority stake in 2007. By 2011, Nintendo owned 96.66% of the company, with its co-founders Tetsuya Takahashi, Hirohide Sugiura, and Yasuyuki Hanne collectively holding the remaining 3.33%. Recent updates to Monolith Soft's official website now confirm that Nintendo owns all 2,400 shares, effectively finalizing the buyout.

The timing of the acquisition remains uncertain. Monolith Soft began listing Nintendo as its sole owner between October 1 and November 21, 2024, although the transaction may have been completed earlier. As of February 2024, the studio’s annual company brochure still listed Nintendo as a partial owner.

With this acquisition, Nintendo ensures complete control over Monolith Soft’s operations, though the studio’s day-to-day functions are unlikely to see major changes. The developer has been a Nintendo subsidiary for 17 of its 25 years and is currently working on Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition, a remaster of the 2015 Wii U JRPG, set for release on March 20, 2025, exclusively for the Switch.

In addition to its flagship titles, Monolith Soft has played a crucial support role on major Nintendo projects. The studio contributed to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Pikmin 2, Splatoon 3, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, among others. Monolith Soft's Tokyo 2nd Production Team has also been instrumental in the development of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, further cementing its importance within Nintendo’s ecosystem.
