Kangaskhan's Power in Pokemon TCG Pocket Draws Criticism from Players
Some players of Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket have recently voiced concerns over Kangaskhan's strength, particularly on social media. Many feel that the Basic Pokémon's abilities are too overpowered, as it can quickly dismantle a variety of setups, including some of the most popular meta decks in the game.
After a month-long open beta exclusive to New Zealand, Pokémon TCG Pocket launched internationally on October 30, featuring the Genetic Apex expansion, which includes 226 cards. Kangaskhan, a Colorless-type Basic Pokémon with 100 HP, is card number 203 in the set. It only has one attack, Dizzy Punch, which has caused some players to question its balance in the game.
While Kangaskhan's simple attack may seem straightforward, Dizzy Punch deals between 0 and 60 damage based on the outcome of two coin flips, with each heads result dealing 30 damage. On average, the attack inflicts 30 damage, which is typical for a move requiring just one Energy. However, if the player lands two heads, the attack hits for a powerful 60 damage as early as turn one (for the player going second), giving them a significant advantage and often allowing them to dominate the early game.
This potential to end games quickly has led to concerns, with Reddit user JRH99 recently calling Kangaskhan "the real enemy boss" in a post discussing the Pokémon TCG Pocket event where players earned Emblems through PvP battles. The post received thousands of upvotes, suggesting that many players share this view.

Despite its strength, Kangaskhan can be countered as early as turn two. A common strategy involves evolving Vulpix into Ninetales and using Giovanni to deal exactly 100 damage to Kangaskhan, exploiting its full HP. However, this plan can fail if the opposing player uses Kangaskhan to deal 60 damage to Vulpix on turn one, a scenario that occurs 25% of the time when Kangaskhan's player goes second.
Kangaskhan can currently be obtained from the Genetic Apex Charizard pack. Developer DeNA has confirmed that Genetic Apex boosters will remain available even after the next expansion arrives in December, making Kangaskhan relatively easy to acquire. Additionally, with trading coming to Pokémon TCG Pocket in January 2025, players will have another avenue to obtain the rare card.
