Unlike their wild counterparts, zoo animals are not constrained by food shortages or predators, allowing them to live significantly longer lives. While this provides individual animals with extended lifespans, it creates logistical challenges for zoos, which must manage finite holding capacities.

To address these pressures, many zoos limit animal breeding for practical and financial reasons. Others have faced public criticism for culling surplus animals. The 2014 culling of Marius, a healthy two-year-old giraffe, sparked global debate on the ethics of euthanizing healthy zoo animals, highlighting the complexity of managing surplus populations.

In a recent policy statement led by researchers at the University of Zurich, concerns were raised about the widespread use of contraception in zoos. According to lead author Marcus Clauss, restricting animal reproduction alters the age profile and welfare of zoo populations. "Without births, adult animals are deprived of one of their most basic evolutionary drives," Clauss notes. "Additionally, aging populations undermine zoos’ ability to maintain self-sustaining populations, a core mission for conservation."

Surplus animals often cannot be relocated due to capacity limits at other facilities and the challenges of reintroducing animals into the wild. Instead of limiting reproduction, the authors advocate for the planned and respectful culling of surplus animals. Clauss argues this approach supports both population management and public education, aligning zoos with their conservation mission.

Co-author Andrew Abraham from Aarhus University highlights the role zoos play in educating visitors about natural processes, including animal mortality. "Zoos welcome over 700 million visitors annually, offering a unique platform to shape public understanding of life and death in nature. By avoiding discussions about mortality, zoos risk perpetuating unrealistic views of life in the wild," Abraham explains.

Zoos are critical for conservation, especially as many species face extinction threats. Maintaining reproductively active populations ensures that zoos have both young animals and experienced caregivers. Abraham cautions against zoos becoming repositories for geriatric animals, which shift resources toward palliative care rather than active conservation efforts.

Culling surplus animals can also improve sustainability. For example, a German zoo supplies up to 30% of its carnivores’ meat from within its own institution, reducing reliance on commercially slaughtered animals and minimizing its carbon footprint.

While culling, particularly of charismatic mammals, often generates controversy, public opinion is more nuanced than media portrayals suggest. Clauss emphasizes that transparent communication is key: "Zoos must educate visitors about the realities of life and death in population management. This can help shift public attitudes and foster sustainable approaches to animal care."
