Brick + Beam Detroit

House, 2,001-3,000 Square feet

I have worked in the neighborhood just east of Indian Village for over five years, and have fallen in love with the people in the neighborhood. As a result, I had been searching for a house in the neighborhood for years, with very specific requirements: brick, plenty of vacant land around the house, and no neighbors within three lots on each side of me. In the 2014 Wayne County Foreclosure Auction, I found two that fit the bill. I got one purchased for a ridiculously low price. I got the squatters out, and did a full clean out, getting rid of over 6000 pounds of garbage. I am doing a full historical renovation, bringing the house back to what it would have looked like in 1915, when it was built. As of now, the kitchen, one bathroom, and one bedroom are completed. This is ending up to be more work than I had anticipated, but I consider it to be one of the most rewarding things I've done in my life.

Projects

I am stripping all of the original woodwork in the house.

It took: I'm still working on it. I'm thinking it'll take about five years.

Cost: $1,000-2,500

Recorded: February 2016
